The ACS (I) Guitar Orchestra is a full-fledged Niibori orchestra, comprising of the Alto Cembalo, Alto, Prime, Prime Cembalo, Bass, Contrabass and Guitarron. Over the past year, our talented 110-member strong orchestra had performed for a variety of events both on and off campus. With our wide repertoire ranging from major classical works to jazz and even contemporary music, we performed at major school events including Festival of Arts and Honors Day; and at a variety of off-campus venues, including guitar festivals and other public school performances at the Rainbow Centre special needs school and the School of the Arts Singapore. 2016 marked a successful collaboration with our sister school, Anglo-Chinese Junior College, where we performed an extensive array of popular tunes and classical pieces to raise funds for charity.
Additionally, the Guitar Orchestra has performed well in various competitions and examinations. Both the Secondary and the IB section of the Guitar Orchestra clinched a Distinction award in the prestigious Victoria College Examinations, held in April 2016, earning 94 marks and 96 marks out of a total of 100 marks respectively. We also clinched a gold award in the Annual Guitar Ensemble Festival 2016. In addition, both the Secondary and IB Orchestras had also obtained Certificates of Distinction in the Singapore Youth Festival Arts Presentation 2015.
Besides just achievements, the Guitar Orchestra has provided members with invaluable exposure and experience. The orchestra has been improving itself musically and technically through a series of master classes by renowned professional guitarists. Furthermore, the myriad of activities such as annual camps and many other member-organised outings such as Action Day, the orchestra has indeed bonded us as one cohesive family.
In all, we have indeed scaled to greater heights as an Orchestra with our respective Student Presidents—Ethan Tan of 6.11, and Aaron Heng of 4.10 in charge of the orchestra. This success can also be attributed to a team of devoted committee members who carry out their duties with great passion and a heart of service. Currently, Mr Benjamin Yeo leads the orchestra as the teacher-in-charge, along with Mdm Han Jee Boey, Ms Angeline Wong and Ms Sherilyn Khng. We currently have 4 conductors and instructors in the orchestra: Mr Michael Gaspar, Mr Zulkiflee, Mr Balraj Gopal and Mr Timothy Goh.
