About

Officially inaugurated on 16 April 1929 by Principal T. W Hinch, the ACS House system encouraged greater participation and healthy competition in sports both individually and among the House teams. The ACS Houses are named after distinguished people who had contributed significantly to ACS. All the ACS Schools have the same House system.

1
Thoburn House (Thoburn)

Thoburn House was named after Bishop Dr James Thoburn. He was responsible for initiating and accompanying the pioneer mission to Singapore. He and Bishop Oldham were responsible for the setting up of the Methodist Church as a Mission in Singapore in 1885. Bishop Dr Thoburn’s vision, with Bishop Oldham’s active mission, made possible the birth of ACS. Had it not been for him, there might not have been an ACS. It was his personal initiative as an important leader in the Methodist Conference in India that resulted in the planting of the first Methodist Church in Singapore in 1885.

2
Oldham House (Oldham)

Oldham House was named after Bishop William F Oldham who founded ACS in 1886. His first tour of duty in Singapore lasted about five years and the Methodist Mission was well and truly established when he left Singapore. Poor health forced him to return to America. In 1926, he and his wife visited Singapore and participated in the 40th anniversary of the School, and again in 1935 at the Golden Jubilee of the Methodist Mission.

3
Cheong Koon Seng House (CKS)

As one of the earliest ACSians, Mr Cheong Koon Seng joined the school in 1891. A successful businessman and a well-known public figure as the Municipal Councillor, he was for many years the President of ACSOBA. In the 1934 ACS Magazine, Mr Cheong was memorialized as “a genial friend, a sound businessman and a loyal old boy of the school to which he had rendered valuable and ungrudging help.” Working closely with the Methodist Mission, he helped to acquire the land at Barker Road where the ACS (Barker Road) complex now stands.

4
Tan Kah Kee House (TKK)

A prolific Patron of education, Mr Tan Kah Kee is synonymous with leadership, entrepreneurship, philanthropy and social reform. Mr Tan was also a member of the Anglo-Chinese College Council formed by Rev Nagle and had himself pledged S$100,000 to the proposed Anglo Chinese School College in 1919. However, when the proposal was turned down by the Government, Tan Kah Kee agreed to channel the $30,000 he had given to the ACS fund for physics and chemistry. This helped to complete the Secondary School at Cairnhill in 1928.

5
Goh Hood Keng House (GHK)

Rev Goh Hood Keng was enrolled in ACS “as a lad barely six years of age”. After graduation, he taught for 20 years in ACS and distinguished himself as one of the most esteemed teachers of the school. His students included Yap Pheng Geck, Thio Chan Bee and Lee Choon Eng among many other distinguished ACSians. At the same time, he became a local preacher and later a full minister of the Church. He was the first Singaporean ordained Methodist Minister. As a minister of the Methodist Church, he pastured the Straits Chinese Methodist Church (Kampong Kapor Methodist Church) for nearly 40 years until he retired in 1952. As a preacher, Bishop Doraisamy considered him a “legend before his time”.

6
Lee Seng Gee House (LSG)

Dr Lee Seng Gee is the long-standing Chairman of the Lee Foundation and the Lee Rubber Group, is known for his many charitable and philanthropic contributions towards education, the underprivileged and the arts. Dr Lee and the Lee Foundation have contributed much to the development of the ACS schools. These include the Lee Kuo Chuan Auditorium of Barker Road in memory of his father in 1950 and the Lee Kong Chian Centre of the Performing Arts in ACS (Independent).

7
Shaw Vee Meng House (SVM)

A prominent Old Boy, Dr Shaw Vee Meng is the Chairman of the Shaw Foundation which was set up in 1957. The Shaw Foundation has given generously to various fields of education, welfare, medicine and heritage. In 1970, Shaw Foundation financed the new Olympic-sized pool, Shaw Pool, at the ACS at Barker Road, making it the first school in Singapore to own such a sporting facility. The Shaw Foundation has also funded various other school projects such as the building of one block of classrooms, named Shaw Block in the old Barker Road Campus and the Shaw Library at ACS (Independent). To this day, the Shaw Foundation continues to make generous donations to the ACS family of Schools.

8
Tan Chin Tuan House (TCT)

The relationship between the Tan family and ACS can be traced back to Mr Tan Cheng Siong (the father of Tan Chin Tuan) who supported Rev Nagle’s aborted plan to establish Anglo-Chinese College. Educated in ACS, Tan Sri Tan Chin Tuan is most synonymous with the Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation (OCBC) for his role in building it into one of the world’s top banks. His success in the business world is paralleled by his contribution to public service where he was involved in many aspects of Singapore’s post-war rehabilitation and was from 1951-55 the Deputy President of the Singapore Executive Council. A noted philanthropist, he was the President of the ACSOBA (1938 – 41) and continues to be a generous benefactor to the ACS schools. His generosity to his alma mater, Anglo-Chinese School, is commemorated in numerous building projects and scholarships awarded to outstanding students at both ACS (Independent) and Anglo-Chinese Junior College and named after ACS pioneers. In return for his staunch support for ACS, he is said to have hoped that the School produce good students with moral fibre.
